The company was founded in 1990 by entrepreneur Sam Farber and his son John. The idea was born out of love: Sam watched his wife, Betsey, struggle to use a standard metal vegetable peeler because of arthritis in her hands. Partnering with the New York firm Smart Design, they spent extensive time researching and talking to consumers—including arthritis support groups—to build a tool that would reduce hand strain.

The result was the iconic OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler, featuring a plump, comfortable, and non-slip handle made from thermoplastic rubber.
